The Magellan International School (Austin, TX) is committed to reducing the amount of trash that goes to the landfill. Every year, 3-4 year-old students learn about natural resources, animals, plants and the role of human beings in caring for the Earth.

This year, as part of the Wrigley‘s Litter Less campaign, the school focused on the topic of upcycling. Magellan collaborates with Terracycle to upcycle materials that are commonly unrecyclable.

Students collected four types of material at the school cafeteria: bar and chips wrappers, applesauce pouches, fruit pure pouches, and string cheese wrappers.

On April 22nd, students & staff from Magellan organized an Earth Day Assembly. The assembly began with Magellan staff presenting a play in Spanish to show daily life situations related to upcycling.

Student helped to sort and recover the material for upcyling. They placed this material into an upcycling bin, which the teachers then opened from the bottom to reveal a beautiful upcycled curtain. Students exclaimed with oohs and ahhs before walking through the curtain and out to recess at the end of the assembly.
